BENGAL MOVES TO END SEPARATE MADRASAH RECRUITMENT SYSTEM, BRING TEACHERS UNDER SSC
October 8, 2026
The Bengal government has decided to move towards abolishing the Madrasah Service Commission and bringing teacher recruitment for recognised madrasas under the Bengal School Service Commission, in a major restructuring of the state’s school recruitment system.
The state cabinet has approved the proposed merger, with the School Education Department expected to introduce two separate bills in the Assembly. One bill will seek to repeal the Bengal Madrasah Service Commission Act, while the other will amend the Bengal School Service Commission Act to incorporate the recruitment functions currently handled by the madrasa commission.
The proposed changes will require approval from the state Assembly before they can take effect. The legislation will subsequently be sent to the governor for assent, after which a gazette notification will formally bring the changes into force.
Education department principal secretary Binod Kumar said the merger is expected to be completed within this year. Under the proposed arrangement, recruitment of teachers for recognised madrasas would be conducted through the Bengal School Service Commission.
Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari had also announced the proposed abolition of the Madrasah Service Commission at a programme on Tuesday evening, stating that its functions would be merged with the Bengal School Service Commission.
According to government officials, the restructuring is intended to streamline teacher recruitment and establish greater uniformity in the recruitment process across educational institutions in Bengal.
The proposed merger will therefore bring the recruitment of teachers in recognised madrasas within the same institutional framework used for recruitment to government-aided schools, subject to the passage of the proposed legislation and completion of the formal approval process.
