BENGAL PLANS INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC PARKS ON GOVERNMENT LAND PARCELS

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government is considering offering government-owned land parcels to industry associations and chambers of commerce for developing product-specific and sector-specific industrial parks, according to Subrata Gupta, adviser to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The proposal is aimed at attracting investment without requiring the state to develop every industrial park itself.

Gupta said the government was examining the possibility of making available land in its possession to industry bodies for setting up dedicated parks. He was speaking at the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Indo-Pacific Economic Conclave on Friday.

West Bengal currently has more than 100 industrial zones supported by state agencies and departments, covering sectors including textiles, manufacturing, food processing, information technology, chemicals, iron and steel, plastics, and gems and jewellery. Private developers have also established clusters in areas such as logistics, warehousing and light engineering.

Gupta said the state was also open to developing a defence-focused industrial park. He referred to recent allotments of land to units involved in manufacturing detonators and shells, including a 200-acre site in Purulia. Meanwhile, the government is examining changes to its land framework, including land pooling and time-bound clearances for individuals and companies seeking to hold land beyond existing ceilings.
