September 30, 2026

The West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the recent clash at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata, with the panel directed to submit its first report by October 1.

The decision follows violence on the institute campus that prompted concerns over student safety and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. The SIT has been tasked with examining the sequence of events, identifying those involved and determining the factors that led to the clash.

The investigation is expected to cover available evidence, including accounts from students and staff, campus records and other relevant material. Authorities are also expected to examine whether any lapses in security or administration contributed to the escalation.

The formation of the SIT comes amid heightened attention surrounding the functioning of the premier film institute and the safety of its students. The administration has been asked to cooperate with the investigation and provide relevant information to the probe team.

The first report, due on October 1, is expected to provide an initial assessment of the incident and indicate the next steps in the investigation.

Further action will depend on the findings of the SIT and the evidence gathered during its inquiry.
