BENGAL TEACHER RECRUITMENT TARGETED FOR MARCH AMID OBC QUOTA LITIGATION
September 26, 2026
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has said the recruitment of teachers for secondary and higher-secondary classes in government-aided schools will be completed by March 2027. The assurance comes amid continuing legal challenges over the state government's revised Other Backward Classes reservation policy.
According to the report, the government has withdrawn a petition earlier filed in the Supreme Court in support of 17 per cent OBC reservation covering 140 sub-categories. The revised policy provides 7 per cent reservation for 66 OBC sub-categories, with the government maintaining that the changes address complications affecting the recruitment process.
However, candidates have expressed concern that the recruitment process could face further delays because petitions challenging the implementation of the revised reservation policy have been filed before the Calcutta High Court. The challenge relates in particular to the decision to apply the revised quota during a recruitment exercise that had already begun.
The recruitment process has already faced repeated disruptions linked to the broader controversy over school-teacher appointments in Bengal. The state government has said it intends to complete the fresh recruitment within the timetable set by the courts, while candidates remain focused on whether the ongoing litigation will affect the March target.
