BENGAL’S VANISHING WATER BODIES: SUVENDU ADHIKARI ACCUSES TRINAMOOL GOVERNMENT OF FILLING UP 5,000 PONDS

October 13, 2026

KOLKATA:CM Suvendu Adhikari has raised concerns over the alleged disappearance of ponds and other water bodies in West Bengal, claiming that approximately 5,000 water bodies have been filled up under the Trinamool Congress government.

The allegation has brought renewed attention to the issue of wetland and pond conservation in the state, particularly amid concerns about urbanisation, land use and the protection of natural water resources.

Adhikari’s remarks place the spotlight on the responsibility of the state government to safeguard ponds and other water bodies against encroachment and unauthorised filling. Such water bodies play an important role in groundwater recharge, rainwater retention and maintaining the ecological balance of local communities.

The controversy has also intensified the political debate over environmental protection and the management of land and water resources in Bengal. The allegation, however, remains a claim made by the CM cum  BJP leader and should not be treated as an independently established finding without supporting verification.
