KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Friday initiated a suo motu case over the alleged pelting of eggs at lawyer Sayan Banerjee inside the Baruipur district court earlier this week. A division bench headed by Chief Justice R.V. Ghuge and Justice Om Narayan Rai directed the Registrar General to formally register the proceedings.
Banerjee had appeared before the Baruipur court for SFI activists arrested following a clash involving ABVP students at Bhangar College. After the court granted the activists bail, Banerjee alleged that ABVP supporters protesting the order hurled eggs at him and his assistants inside the court premises.
The High Court sought a report from the South 24-Parganas district judge on the incident and appointed advocate Saikat Bandyopadhyay as amicus curiae. The bench also directed advocate Sabyasachi Banerjee to submit an affidavit detailing the incident. The matter is expected to come up for hearing again in the first week of October.
The incident has also prompted protests by a section of lawyers. During Friday’s hearing, the Chief Justice described the matter as serious and expressed concern over the security of lawyers within court premises.
