CBI SEEKS DETAILS OF 42 ALLEGEDLY UNAUTHORISED BUILDINGS IN CENTRAL KOLKATA

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought details of 42 buildings allegedly constructed without proper authorisation in areas under Kolkata’s Narkeldanga and Amherst Street police stations. The move follows a Calcutta High Court directive ordering a preliminary probe into alleged unauthorised constructions across parts of central Kolkata.

CBI officers visited the two police stations and submitted letters seeking information about the identified properties, including details of any criminal cases or court proceedings associated with them. The agency is also collecting information on buildings identified by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in the Rajabazar, Maniktala, Canal East Road and Beleghata areas.

The High Court had earlier directed the CBI to investigate allegations surrounding unauthorised multi-storeyed constructions and submit a preliminary report by October 14. The court also permitted the agency to constitute a Special Investigation Team if required.

The KMC had identified 42 structures as involving unauthorised construction and was directed to prepare a time-bound roadmap concerning their demolition. The broader court proceedings have also involved allegations of unaccounted financial transactions connected with some of the constructions, though these remain matters under investigation.
