COOCH BEHAR: Police in Cooch Behar seized 747 bottles of cough syrup and around 48,000 capsules of muscle relaxants and painkillers during a raid in the Talliguri-Kataltala area on Thursday. Two people were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Kotwali police station raided the house of Hemanta Sarkar and recovered the consignment. Sarkar and Sohel Roy were subsequently arrested from nearby Kaliaghat Road. Police also seized five mobile phones during the operation.
Police registered a case against the two men under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Officials said the seized materials were taken into custody following prescribed legal procedures in the presence of an executive magistrate and the inspector-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
Investigators suspect that the consignment was intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh. Police are questioning the arrested men to determine the source of the medicines and establish whether they were connected to a larger trafficking network. The two accused were produced before a court and remanded in police custody for four days.
