CPM SEEKS JOINT OPPOSITION ACTION OVER ELECTION COMMISSION CREDIBILITY
September 27, 2026
CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby has written to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and other opposition leaders seeking coordinated action over concerns surrounding the functioning of the Election Commission of India and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Baby’s outreach followed reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on multiple occasions concerning decisions related to the SIR exercise. The Election Commission has maintained that differing views are part of its institutional deliberations and that its decisions follow statutory procedures.
Banerjee responded positively to Baby’s proposal and subsequently spoke with him about coordinating with opposition parties. She has also called for an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on September 30 to discuss the Election Commission controversy and the electoral-roll revision process.
The development marks communication between the TMC and CPI(M) on a national institutional issue despite their longstanding political rivalry in West Bengal. Baby has said the proposed coordination concerns the Election Commission, democratic institutions and voting rights rather than an electoral understanding between the two parties.
