FESTIVE LIGHTS, NOT TOXIC FUMES: BENGAL WARNS OF STRICT ACTION AGAINST FIRECRACKER VIOLATIONS

October 29, 2026

KOLKATA, OCTOBER 29, 2026: The West Bengal government has warned of strict legal action against violations of firecracker regulations during Kali Puja and Diwali, urging residents to celebrate responsibly while complying with environmental and public-safety requirements.

The state administration has emphasised the importance of adhering to the prescribed standards for fireworks and avoiding prohibited firecrackers that can contribute to air and noise pollution. Authorities have urged residents, traders and organisers to observe the applicable restrictions throughout the festive period.

The warning comes amid concerns over deteriorating air quality and excessive noise during large-scale celebrations. Firecracker emissions can release particulate matter and other pollutants, aggravating respiratory problems, while loud explosions can disturb children, older people, patients and animals.

Officials have indicated that enforcement measures will target those who manufacture, sell, store or use firecrackers in violation of the applicable rules. Residents have been encouraged to purchase only legally permitted products and follow the instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

The administration's appeal also highlights the importance of preventing fire accidents and injuries during crowded celebrations. Police and other enforcement agencies are expected to monitor compliance and take action against violations under the applicable legal provisions.

West Bengal's warning reflects the challenge of balancing popular religious festivities with environmental protection and public health. Authorities have urged people to celebrate Kali Puja and Diwali with restraint, ensuring that the festivities do not come at the expense of community safety or cleaner air.
