HUMAYUN KABIR’S REMARKS ON SUVENDU ADHIKARI’S DEATH DRAW BJP CONDEMNATION
September 27, 2026
A political controversy erupted in West Bengal on Sunday after Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir made remarks expressing a wish for Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to leave the world soon. Kabir made the comments while speaking to reporters in Murshidabad.
Kabir said he wanted Adhikari to cease being chief minister and alleged that the Chief Minister had become “arrogant” after coming to power. He also referred to the deaths of several prominent political figures while making his remarks.
The comments drew condemnation from BJP leaders. Health Minister Shardwat Mukhopadhyay said political disagreements or differences over government policies could not justify wishing for an opponent’s death. He described Kabir’s remarks as unacceptable and strongly criticised them.
Kabir’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in Murshidabad ahead of the October 6 Rejinagar bypoll. Kabir, who retained the Nowda seat in the 2026 Assembly elections, had earlier won both constituencies before vacating Rejinagar, where his party has fielded his son, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
