JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY SUBMITS THREE YEARS OF EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RECORDS TO BENGAL GOVERNMENT
September 25, 2026
KOLKATA: Jadavpur University has submitted details of all resolutions adopted by its Executive Council (EC) over the past three years to the West Bengal higher education department, a senior university official said on Friday. The records, covering the period from 2023 to 2026, were sent following a request from the department last month.
The Executive Council is the university’s key decision-making body and includes nominees of the higher education department, the Chancellor-Governor and the state Finance Department. An EC member noted that representatives of these authorities already have access to the council’s resolutions.
The government’s request has nevertheless triggered debate within the university over institutional autonomy. Members of the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) questioned whether seeking such detailed records could affect the university’s autonomy, while others argued that the state government was within its rights to obtain the documents.
The issue has also raised questions about transparency and public access to university decisions. A section of the university community has argued that EC resolutions should ideally be placed in the public domain so that administrative, financial and appointment-related decisions can be examined.
Bhaskar Sardar, secretary of the Jadavpur University unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, said the records should be properly examined and, where appropriate, made public to strengthen transparency, accountability and compliance with established procedures
