KOLKATA CIVIC BODY STARTS FINAL ROAD REPAIR DRIVE AHEAD OF DURGA PUJA

September 29, 2026

With Durga Puja approaching, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has identified several major roads and stretches across the city for urgent repairs. The move comes amid growing concerns over potholes, damaged surfaces and deteriorating road conditions following weeks of heavy rainfall.

The roads listed for immediate attention include parts of EM Bypass, Alipore Road, Burdwan Road, Gurusaday Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, Diamond Harbour Road and Central Avenue. Dedicated repair teams have been assigned to the work, with engineers instructed to monitor progress and provide photographs along with location details for assessment.

KMC officials said repair operations would be carried out largely at night to minimise disruption to traffic. However, some stretches will have to wait until ongoing underground water-related works and leakages are resolved. Sections of SP Mukherjee Road and the Ballygunge Circular Road area have been identified as requiring such coordination.

Kolkata Police had earlier flagged several important roads requiring urgent repairs because of their importance for traffic movement during the festival. Civic authorities have attributed the delayed repair programme partly to unusually heavy September rainfall, which makes conventional bituminous roadwork difficult on wet surfaces.

The KMC has placed its hot-mix plant on an emergency footing and aims to complete the immediate repair programme by October 8. The city recorded 547.9mm of rainfall in Alipore between September 1 and 25, more than twice the long-term average for the period, adding to the deterioration of several road stretches.
