A Class IX student of South Point High School in Kolkata was injured after a classmate allegedly attacked him with a sharp object during class hours on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 12.30pm while the class teacher was present. The injured student was initially taken to the school infirmary for first aid before being shifted to Ruby General Hospital for treatment.

The teenager suffered a deep laceration extending from the neck towards the face, along with injuries to several fingers of his left hand. Doctors treated associated muscle and tendon injuries, and the student was reported to be in stable condition after treatment.

Police said the object used in the attack was a paper cutter and that the incident followed a dispute over a textbook. According to the police account, one student had allegedly torn the other student's book and the disagreement subsequently escalated.

The student accused of carrying out the attack was removed from the classroom and counselled by school psychologists before being taken home by his father. Both boys are 15 years old.

Police have initiated a case in connection with the incident, while reports have also been submitted to the Juvenile Justice Board and the Child Welfare Committee
