KOLKATA DOCTORS PROTEST OVER REGISTRATION IRREGULARITIES AS FAKE DOCTOR CASES SPARK SCRUTINY
September 29, 2026
Doctors in Kolkata have raised concerns over alleged irregularities in medical registrations following the emergence of cases involving individuals accused of obtaining registration through fraudulent documents. The issue has triggered demands for greater transparency and stricter verification by the West Bengal Medical Council.
The controversy intensified after the Council cancelled the registrations of five doctors accused of using forged documents from Bihar to obtain permission to practise in West Bengal. The state Health Department has also initiated an investigation into the matter.
Doctors’ organisations have questioned how individuals allegedly using fraudulent credentials were able to obtain medical registrations and subsequently practise. Complaints have also been lodged against senior officials associated with the West Bengal Medical Council, although the allegations remain subject to investigation and have been denied by those named.
The West Bengal Medical Council has indicated that it will re-verify the credentials of doctors who graduated from medical colleges outside West Bengal and have been practising in the state for the past decade. The exercise is intended to identify irregular registrations and ensure that medical practitioners meet the required qualifications.
The developments have prompted calls for stronger verification procedures, improved record management and closer coordination between the Medical Council, health authorities and law-enforcement agencies. The ongoing investigations are expected to establish the extent of the alleged registration irregularities and determine responsibility where violations are proven.
