KOLKATA TIGHTENS STADIUM SECURITY AS BRAZIL’S FOOTBALL GIANTS ARRIVE FOR HISTORIC CLASH
October 2, 2026
Kolkata is preparing for a major international football spectacle with an extensive security and crowd-management operation ahead of the India-Brazil exhibition match scheduled for October 3 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium. Bidhannagar police have drawn up detailed arrangements to manage the expected crowds, secure the venue and prevent a recurrence of the disorder witnessed during Lionel Messi’s visit to the stadium in December 2025.
A large police contingent will be deployed across the stadium, its surrounding areas and major approach roads. The arrangements include multiple layers of ticket verification and frisking, strengthened security at individual seating blocks, CCTV surveillance, plainclothes personnel and mobile patrols. Senior police officers will supervise the operation, while additional forces will remain available if required.
Spectators will be required to occupy their designated numbered seats and follow specified entry routes. Entry gates and approach roads will be monitored to reduce congestion, while traffic signage and parking arrangements are being put in place around the venue. Authorities have advised fans to arrive well before kick-off to allow sufficient time for security checks and avoid last-minute crowding.
Police have prohibited several items inside the stadium, including water bottles, outside food, firecrackers, laser lights, sharp objects, weapons, inflammable materials, umbrellas, banners and posters. Drinking water will be made available through designated facilities inside the venue, while food kiosks are expected to operate within the stadium. Raincoats will be permitted under the announced restrictions.
The security strategy also places tighter controls on access to the playing area, including restrictions on personal security personnel accompanying VIPs inside the ground. Police and other agencies have coordinated emergency arrangements to respond to medical incidents, crowd surges or other unforeseen situations. The measures follow criticism of crowd management during Messi’s appearance, when spectators surged towards the field and stadium property was damaged.
The India-Brazil fixture is expected to draw substantial public attention, with Brazil bringing internationally recognised players to Kolkata. The stadium is also scheduled to host further international fixtures, including India’s match against Uruguay on October 6 and women’s international friendlies against Russia on October 8 and 11. Authorities have indicated that the enhanced security operation will extend across the series, with public cooperation considered essential to ensuring the matches proceed safely.
