KOLKATA, OCTOBER 18: Durga Puja celebrations in north Kolkata turned tragic after a devastating crowd crush at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Puja pandal claimed 19 lives, prompting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to urge organisers across the state to address safety shortcomings and prevent further disasters.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening when a large gathering of visitors surged amid heavy rainfall, triggering panic and a dangerous rush at the crowded venue. Several people were reportedly injured as visitors struggled to move through congested areas.

The incident has raised serious questions about crowd management, the adequacy of entry and exit routes, and the preparedness of organisers to handle sudden surges in visitor numbers. The scale of the gathering and the difficulties faced by people attempting to move through the pandal have brought the safety arrangements under intense scrutiny.

In response, the chief minister called on Durga Puja organisers to identify and rectify gaps in their arrangements. The emphasis is on ensuring unobstructed movement, strengthening crowd-control measures and preventing temporary structures or narrow passages from becoming dangerous bottlenecks.

The disaster has cast a shadow over Kolkata’s festive season, transforming a celebration marked by public participation and elaborate pandals into a moment of mourning. It has also renewed demands for stricter enforcement of safety standards at major religious and cultural gatherings across West Bengal.
