LORETO SEALDAH TO OPEN SENIOR SECONDARY ADMISSIONS TO BOYS FROM 2028, ENDING 170-YEAR ALL-GIRLS TRADITION
November 2, 2026
Kolkata’s historic Loreto Sealdah school is set to admit boys to Classes XI and XII from 2028, marking a significant change in its educational policy and bringing an end to nearly 170 years of its all-girls tradition.
The institution, established in 1857, has been associated with girls’ education in Kolkata for generations. Its decision to introduce co-educational admissions at the senior secondary level represents a major development in the school’s long history.
Under the proposed arrangement, boys will be eligible for admission to the higher secondary section from the 2028 academic session. The change will initially apply to Classes XI and XII, while the school’s existing educational structure for younger students will continue as before.
The decision reflects the institution’s evolving approach to education and its response to changing requirements in the academic environment. The move is also expected to expand access to senior secondary education at one of Kolkata’s established educational institutions.
The development marks a new chapter for Loreto Sealdah, an institution whose identity has remained closely connected with girls’ education since the nineteenth century.
