LOVE, VIOLENCE AND PUBLIC HUMILIATION: THREE ARRESTED AFTER FATHER AND SON ALLEGEDLY PARADED NAKED IN KOLKATA
October 26, 2026
A disturbing incident in Kolkata’s Behala area has triggered public outrage after a young man and his father were allegedly stripped naked and paraded through the streets following a dispute over the young man’s relationship with a woman. Police arrested three members of the woman’s family on Monday, October 26, as investigators examined allegations of assault, criminal intimidation and public humiliation.
The incident allegedly occurred on Sunday in the Basundhara Park area under the jurisdiction of Sarsuna police station. According to preliminary police findings, members of the woman’s family caught the young man with her and confined him inside a house. The young man was allegedly assaulted by the woman’s father and maternal uncle before his own father was summoned to the location.
A senior police officer said the investigation had uncovered allegations that the young man’s father was handed a firearm and threatened with a horrifying choice: either kill his son or walk naked through the streets. The father and son were subsequently allegedly stripped and forced to parade in public, turning a private relationship dispute into an act of public degradation.
The young man’s friend was also reportedly assaulted and subjected to similar humiliation, according to the police officer. Investigators are working to establish the full sequence of events and determine the roles played by the individuals allegedly involved.
A video purportedly showing the incident circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention and intensifying anger among local residents. The footage’s authenticity had not been independently verified by the Press Trust of India, and the allegations remain subject to police investigation.
The incident also triggered tension in the neighbourhood. According to police, some angry residents allegedly attempted to vandalise the woman’s house after learning about the episode. A police team reached the area and brought the situation under control. Some members of the woman’s family reportedly fled before officers arrived, while her maternal uncle was caught by local residents and handed over to the police.
Three people were arrested in connection with the case, including the woman’s father and maternal uncle. Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged assault and public humiliation, while further details about the other accused and the precise circumstances are being established.
The case has raised serious concerns about the use of violence and intimidation to police personal relationships. Disapproval of a relationship does not justify assault, unlawful confinement, threats with a firearm or the deliberate humiliation of another person. Such allegations require a proper criminal investigation and accountability in accordance with the law.
The reported threat involving a firearm is particularly serious. Police have yet to establish all the details surrounding the alleged weapon and the threats made against the victims. Investigators will need to examine witness accounts, available video footage and other evidence to determine what occurred and whether additional individuals participated in the incident.
At the same time, the public anger that followed the episode reportedly developed into an attempt to attack the woman’s family home. Such retaliatory violence risks creating further harm and obstructing the legal process. The allegations against the arrested individuals must be investigated through lawful procedures rather than answered with another act of intimidation or mob violence.
The incident has once again brought attention to the dangers of coercive moral policing, in which individuals attempt to impose their personal or family views on relationships through force and public humiliation. Whatever the circumstances of the original dispute, allegations of stripping people, assaulting them and forcing them to walk naked in public raise fundamental questions about personal dignity, bodily autonomy and the protection of citizens from violence.
For the victims, the immediate concern is to obtain protection, medical assistance where required and a fair investigation into the alleged abuse. For the authorities, the priority is to establish the facts, determine criminal responsibility and prevent further unrest in the locality.
As the investigation continues, the Behala case stands as a stark reminder that disagreements over relationships cannot be treated as a licence for private punishment. The allegations are grave, and the outcome of the police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings will be essential in establishing responsibility and ensuring that the victims receive justice.
