MAMATA TO JOIN INDIA BLOC MEET AS OPPOSITION COORDINATES RESPONSE TO SIR CONTROVERSY
September 27, 2026
West Bengal Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will participate in an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on September 30 to discuss concerns surrounding the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Addressing a public meeting in Serampore on Saturday, Banerjee called for opposition parties to coordinate their response to the controversy. She said political differences should not prevent parties from working together on issues concerning electoral rights and the functioning of democratic institutions.
Banerjee has also held discussions with CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby, marking communication between the Trinamool Congress and the Left on the SIR issue despite their longstanding political rivalry in West Bengal. The proposed INDIA bloc meeting is expected to consider the opposition's next course of action concerning the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Election Commission has maintained that the SIR exercise is intended to ensure the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls. Opposition parties, meanwhile, have raised objections to the process and called for further scrutiny of the exercise.
