NANDIGRAM POLITICAL TENSIONS FLARE AS LAND MOVEMENT LEADER’S SHOP IS TORCHED

October 8, 2026

A shop belonging to a prominent Nandigram land movement leader was allegedly set on fire following the recent bypoll, triggering fresh political tension in the politically sensitive East Midnapore area.

The affected shop is owned by the family of a leader associated with the movement against land acquisition in Nandigram. Family members alleged that the incident was politically motivated and claimed that supporters of the BJP were responsible for the attack.

The fire caused substantial damage to the shop and prompted concerns among local residents about a possible escalation of political violence following the election. Police reached the area and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the possibility of deliberate arson.

The allegations have added another layer of tension to Nandigram, a constituency that has remained one of the most politically contested areas of West Bengal since the historic land movement of the mid-2000s.

Political parties have traded accusations over the incident, while the investigation is expected to establish whether the fire was the result of political violence or another cause. Authorities have also been urged to maintain peace in the area and prevent further confrontation between rival political groups.
