NEHA BORA CALLS FOR A CAMPUS RESISTANCE AS BENGAL’S POLITICAL BATTLE SHARPENS
October 6, 2026
AISA national president Neha Bora has called for a stronger defence of democratic values in West Bengal, arguing that educational institutions must resist attempts to restrict political expression and student activism.
Speaking amid growing tensions surrounding campuses in the state, Bora said Bengal would have to stand up against what she described as attacks on democratic spaces. She maintained that universities and educational institutions should remain places where students can freely debate political, social and ideological questions.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of controversies surrounding several campuses, including allegations of intimidation, political confrontation and attempts to influence student spaces. The developments have intensified an already polarised debate over the role of political organisations in educational institutions.
Bora argued that students would not retreat in the face of pressure and insisted that campus communities must continue defending democratic rights and freedom of expression. She also portrayed the current tensions as part of a larger political struggle over the character of Bengal’s public and educational institutions.
The comments are likely to further intensify the political debate surrounding student activism in the state, where rival ideological groups have increasingly clashed over questions of democracy, political participation and the independence of campuses.
With tensions continuing to build, Bengal’s universities are once again emerging as important arenas in the wider political contest over the state’s future direction.
