NINE-MONTH MANHUNT ENDS IN BIHAR AS NIA TRACKS DOWN SUSPECTED TERROR OUTFIT ASSOCIATE

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested 29-year-old Mujibur Rahman from Bihar over his alleged links with the banned terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, bringing an end to a nearly nine-month search for the resident of South Dinajpur in West Bengal.

Rahman was brought to Banshihari police station in South Dinajpur late on Thursday night after being detained in Bihar. The NIA is expected to take custody of the accused on transit remand. An agency team travelled from Guwahati in Assam to Banshihari following his detention, although officials have not disclosed how investigators eventually traced him.

According to police sources, Rahman had been missing since January 2, when he allegedly fled from his residence as investigators searched the premises. The development prompted a prolonged search for the 29-year-old, who lives in Kuskhari-Mundehar village under Banshihari police station.

The investigation gathered pace on September 29, when a four-member NIA team searched Rahman’s residence with assistance from local police. Rahman was not present at the house. Investigators subsequently directed his father, Mizanur Rahman, a farmer, to appear at the agency’s office in Kolkata on October 1. He complied with the instruction.

Rahman was eventually traced in Bihar approximately 10 days later. Police sources said that during interrogation, he admitted to having links with Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen. The allegation is part of the ongoing investigation, and the NIA is expected to pursue further questioning after taking custody of the accused.

The case has drawn attention because of the prolonged period during which Rahman remained untraceable despite investigators searching his residence and questioning his family. However, authorities have not publicly disclosed the precise circumstances of his apprehension or the evidence underpinning the alleged terror links.

According to his family and local residents, Rahman had completed a Bachelor of Science degree and was preparing for the Union Public Service Commission examinations. His father has maintained that his son is innocent, rejecting the allegations against him.

The expected transfer of custody to the NIA marks the next stage of the investigation, which will seek to establish the nature of Rahman’s alleged association with Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen and determine whether further action is warranted.
