NO ARRESTS AFTER SRFTI CLASH AS SEVERAL STUDENTS SUFFER INJURIES
September 29, 2026
No arrests had been made by Monday evening following the violence at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata, where several students were injured during a confrontation linked to a programme organised on the campus by the RSS-linked Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP).
Police have registered three FIRs against unidentified persons. One followed a complaint by the ABGP, another was filed by the SRFTI registrar and dean, while the third was registered suo motu in connection with damage to a police vehicle during the unrest.
The confrontation began after students protested against the programme and entered the venue, raising slogans. Accounts of the incident differ, with ABGP members alleging that protesters attacked them, while SRFTI officials said the event organisers assaulted protesting students.
Several students sustained injuries, including cuts caused by sharp objects and injuries from stones allegedly thrown outside the institute. Two injured students were admitted to a hospital and underwent surgical treatment on Monday. Two faculty members were also reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Police and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the clash, including the sequence of events inside and outside the campus and the identities of those involved. The absence of arrests so far comes as the authorities investigate the competing complaints filed after the violence.
