October 29, 2026
RAIGANJ, OCTOBER 29, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced plans to propose an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raiganj and establish a full-fledged cancer hospital in Jalpaiguri as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in north Bengal.
Speaking at a public event in Raiganj, in Uttar Dinajpur district, following an administrative review meeting, Adhikari said the state government would send a proposal to the Centre for setting up the proposed AIIMS at Diknagar in Raiganj.
The announcement brings renewed attention to the expansion of specialised medical services in north Bengal. An AIIMS facility is already operational in Kalyani, Nadia district.
Alongside the proposed medical institute, the chief minister announced plans for a comprehensive cancer hospital in Jalpaiguri. The proposed projects form part of the state's stated plans to expand healthcare facilities in the region.
The establishment of an AIIMS in north Bengal was also among the BJP's promises during the West Bengal Assembly elections.
The proposals, if approved and implemented, could mark a significant development in the region's public healthcare infrastructure. However, the Raiganj AIIMS remains at the proposal stage, while the Jalpaiguri cancer hospital has been announced as a planned project.
