OPPOSITION ALLEGES ELECTORAL MANIPULATION IN BENGAL BYPOLLS, ACCUSES POLL AUTHORITIES OF BIAS

October 6, 2026

KOLKATA — Allegations of large-scale electoral irregularities have emerged from the Nandigram and Rejinagar bypolls in West Bengal, with Opposition voices accusing the police and election authorities of failing to ensure a fair and transparent voting process.

The allegations include claims of voter-related irregularities and administrative lapses during polling. Opposition leaders have questioned whether the mechanisms responsible for protecting the integrity of the electoral process acted impartially during the by-elections.

Criticism has particularly focused on the alleged role of local law-enforcement authorities and election officials. Those making the accusations have claimed that institutional actions or inaction benefited political interests, raising concerns over whether voters were able to exercise their franchise freely.

The controversy has added another layer to the increasingly contentious political environment surrounding elections in Bengal. Claims of intimidation, irregularities and partisan conduct have repeatedly become flashpoints between rival political parties, often resulting in demands for investigations and greater scrutiny of the electoral machinery.

The allegations remain politically contested, and their validity would ultimately depend on evidence and any formal findings by the competent authorities. However, the dispute has once again placed electoral transparency, administrative neutrality and voter confidence at the centre of Bengal's political debate.
