REJINAGAR’S LANDSLIDE BECOMES BJP’S MINORITY-SUPPORT CLAIM AS OPPOSITION CHALLENGES POLL CREDIBILITY
October 29, 2026
KOLKATA, OCTOBER 29, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has cited the Bharatiya Janata Party’s sweeping victory in the Muslim-majority Rejinagar Assembly by-election as evidence that minority voters are beginning to accept his government, triggering fresh political controversy in the state Assembly.
Addressing the House on Wednesday, Adhikari argued that the BJP’s victory had challenged the opposition’s portrayal of the party as communal. Rejinagar, in Murshidabad district, has a Muslim electorate estimated at around 70 per cent, making the result particularly significant for the BJP’s claims of expanding its support beyond Hindu voters.
BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar won the by-election by 75,816 votes. Adhikari also highlighted the party’s victory in Nandigram, where Hasi Rani Rath secured a margin of more than 1.22 lakh votes.
To support his argument, the chief minister cited the state government’s Annapurna Yojana, under which enrolled women receive ₹3,000 monthly. He claimed that approximately 35,000 beneficiaries from minority communities in Rejinagar had received the assistance and that their families had supported the BJP.
Adhikari maintained that the government’s welfare policies were intended to benefit eligible citizens regardless of religious affiliation. He argued that the election results demonstrated growing confidence in the administration across communities.
However, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh rejected the chief minister’s interpretation. He alleged that irregularities and restrictions on voters had affected the by-elections, disputing the claim that the results independently demonstrated widespread minority support for the BJP. These allegations remain contested.
The political dispute highlights a broader question concerning electoral interpretation: whether a large victory margin in a Muslim-majority constituency necessarily reflects a substantial shift in minority voting preferences. Establishing that conclusion would require detailed, independently verified voting data rather than the constituency-wide result alone.
The Rejinagar outcome has consequently become both an electoral achievement claimed by the BJP and a subject of continuing controversy over voting patterns, election administration and minority political representation in West Bengal.
