RG KAR VICTIM’S MOTHER QUESTIONS CBI PROBE, ALLEGES CORRUPTION CONTINUES IN BENGAL’S MEDICAL COLLEGES

Ratna Debnath, mother of the postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) handling of the case and alleged that corruption in West Bengal’s medical institutions continues despite the change in government.

Debnath, now a BJP MLA representing Panihati, said she had received several files containing allegations of corruption at different medical colleges and intended to raise the matter with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She alleged that the same people continued to remain influential within the system and claimed that corruption had not declined. She called on the state government to investigate the allegations contained in the documents.

She also criticised the CBI’s investigation into her daughter’s death, questioning the progress made by the agency and arguing that those whom the family suspects of involvement had not all been brought to justice. Debnath said her family had never sought a central investigation and urged the agency to step aside if it could not carry out the investigation effectively.

The case was transferred to the CBI following an order by the Calcutta High Court. Although Sanjay Roy, a former Kolkata Police civic volunteer, was convicted of the rape and murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, the victim’s parents have continued to raise questions about the investigation and alleged that important aspects of the case remain unresolved.

The family’s concerns have also prompted further judicial scrutiny. The Calcutta High Court previously directed the CBI to conduct a detailed investigation into the sequence of events surrounding the crime, following the parents’ allegations of investigative gaps.

Debnath’s latest remarks have renewed attention on the demand for accountability in the RG Kar case and on allegations of corruption within state-run medical institutions. Her claims concerning medical college corruption remain allegations requiring investigation and verification.
