TMC DEMANDS SPECIAL BENGAL ASSEMBLY SESSION OVER 2,454 RAPE CASES RECORDED IN FIVE MONTHS
October 8, 2026
The Trinamool Congress has launched a fresh political attack on the BJP-led West Bengal government, demanding an immediate special session of the state Assembly to debate what it described as a serious deterioration in law and order.
At a news conference outside the Assembly, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh and advocate Arka Nag cited data obtained through a Right to Information query filed by former Rajya Sabha member Saket Gokhale with the State Crime Records Bureau. According to the data presented by them, 2,454 rape cases, 600 murders, 13,114 attempted murder cases and 32,341 cases of assault causing grievous hurt were recorded between May and September 24 under the new government.
The figures translate into an average of around 16 rape cases, four murders, 87 attempted murders and 216 cases of grievous assault every day during the five-month period, according to the TMC's calculation. The party has demanded that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Governor R.N. Ravi publicly explain what it described as the sharp rise in crime figures.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also highlighted the figures on social media, accusing the BJP government of administrative failure and describing the situation as a “double-engine disaster”.
The BJP rejected the allegations. State BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar argued that the higher figures reflected greater transparency under the new administration, claiming that complaints were now being properly registered and recorded rather than suppressed.
