TOLLYGUNGE GUILD ELECTIONS ATTRACT 3,500 NEW VOTERS, SIGNAL SHIFT IN BENGAL’S ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
November 2, 2026
The upcoming elections of the Tollygunge-based guild have drawn approximately 3,500 new voters, marking a significant development in the organisational and political landscape of Bengal’s entertainment industry. The increased participation is expected to bring fresh dynamics to the guild’s electoral process and potentially reshape representation within the industry.
The substantial addition to the voter base reflects growing engagement among members of the Bengali entertainment fraternity in the guild’s affairs. The elections have attracted attention across the film and television sectors, where professional associations and industry bodies play an important role in representing workers, technicians and other stakeholders.
The elections covered 23 of the 26 guilds over two days. More than 1,000 people voted on Saturday and nearly 2,500 on Sunday, according to sources cited by the newspaper. Voting took place across four studio venues, with police deployment and ballot boxes.
The contest comes amid longstanding allegations of political influence, restricted employment opportunities and disputes over guild membership. Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty expressed hope that the election would bring democratic functioning and a change in the industry’s working environment.
