September 25, 2026

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced a power subsidy of ₹2 per unit for nearly four lakh farmers across the state. The measure is intended to provide relief to agricultural consumers facing rising electricity costs.

Announcing the initiative, Adhikari said there would be no role for middlemen or agents in implementing the subsidy. He stated that elected MLAs would act as guardians of farmers to help ensure the scheme’s delivery.

The chief minister also alleged that farmers had faced harassment under the previous government and reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing their concerns. The announcement comes as the state government seeks to provide financial support to the agricultural sector through reduced electricity costs.

Adhikari further announced that the state government would provide one lakh jobs during the current financial year. He said the recruitment process would be transparent, without providing further details about the timeline or implementation mechanism in the reported announcement.
