A woman was allegedly gang-raped after a group of five men attacked her husband and threatened her with a knife in Subhasgram, under Sonarpur police station in South 24 Parganas district. The incident reportedly took place during the early hours of Saturday, October 31, when the couple was visiting relatives in the area. Police have arrested one person in connection with the case, while four other accused remain at large.
According to the complaint lodged by the couple, they had visited a relative's residence in Subhasgram on Friday night. At around 1.30 am, while they were proceeding towards another house in the neighbourhood, five youths allegedly followed them and intercepted them. The accused reportedly assaulted the woman's husband before threatening the woman with a knife when she raised an alarm.
The woman alleged that she was subsequently dragged into a vacant room, where one of the accused sexually assaulted her while the others restrained her by holding her hands and legs. The group also allegedly threatened to kill both the woman and her husband if they disclosed the incident. After struggling to escape, the woman reportedly managed to free herself and take shelter with her husband at another residence.
The couple approached Sonarpur police station on Saturday morning and submitted a written complaint. Police registered a case and initiated an investigation, leading to the arrest of one accused. The alleged prime accused and three others are reportedly absconding, with police conducting searches to trace them.
The incident has triggered concern among residents of Ward 21 of Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality. Local residents have raised questions about security in the neighbourhood, particularly around the area adjoining Subhasgram railway station. Some residents have alleged that anti-social activities and gatherings involving alcohol and narcotics have continued in the locality.
The investigation is underway as police continue efforts to apprehend the remaining accused. The allegations are subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
