WRITERS’ BUILDINGS RESTORATION TO RECEIVE OVER ₹100 CRORE FROM ADANI GROUP

September 25, 2026

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Adani Group for the restoration of the historic Writers’ Buildings, with the conglomerate expected to invest more than ₹100 crore through its corporate social responsibility initiative.

The restoration project began around 13 years ago, but only approximately 25 per cent of the work has been completed so far. The Adani Group’s involvement marks the first instance of a privately managed restoration project involving a state-owned heritage structure in West Bengal.

The restoration is expected to follow a plan prepared by Jadavpur University and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, in 2013. The proposal includes demolishing several post-Independence additions and restoring the principal blocks to their pre-1947 architectural design.

Officials said the Adani Group would finalise a detailed implementation strategy in coordination with the Public Works Department. The restoration is expected to be completed within approximately one year. A team led by Adani Group adviser and retired IAS officer Sanjay Thade has already visited the building along with PWD officials.
