2027 TAIWAN WAR FEARS EASE AS US OFFICIALS SEE CHINA’S MILITARY OPTION MOVING BEYOND NEXT YEAR

October 1, 2026

A Chinese military invasion of Taiwan before 2028 is increasingly viewed as unlikely by US officials, despite longstanding assessments that President Xi Jinping has directed the People’s Liberation Army to be prepared for a potential operation by 2027.

People familiar with current US assessments said delays in China’s military readiness, partly linked to an extensive anti-corruption campaign within the armed forces, have complicated preparations. The 2027 benchmark has generally been understood as a target for military capability rather than a fixed deadline for launching an invasion.

Another factor is Taiwan’s 2028 presidential election. According to the US officials, Beijing may closely watch the outcome before deciding whether and how to pursue greater pressure on the island. Taiwan’s government strongly rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and maintains that its future should be decided by its people.

US officials also believe China continues to consider non-military approaches to achieving its long-term objective of unification. Earlier US intelligence assessments similarly concluded that Beijing did not have a fixed timetable for an invasion and preferred, if possible, to achieve its goals without war.

The latest assessment does not mean that military conflict has been ruled out. Officials said China could reconsider the use of force from 2028 onward depending on developments in Taiwan, the state of the PLA and the wider strategic environment.

The situation remains closely watched in Washington, Taipei and Beijing because any conflict across the Taiwan Strait could have major consequences for regional security, global trade and technology supply chains. The United States remains Taiwan’s principal international security partner despite not maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taipei.

China continues to regard Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force. Taiwan rejects Beijing’s territorial claims, leaving the Taiwan Strait as one of the most closely monitored potential flashpoints in the Indo-Pacific.
