AUSTRALIA TIGHTENS VISA IDENTITY CHECKS FOR INDIANS, INTRODUCES FINGERPRINT AND FACIAL DATA REQUIREMENTS

October 27, 2026

NEW DELHI, October 27, 2026: Australia has expanded its biometric data collection programme to Indian visa applicants, introducing new identity verification requirements for applications lodged from October 26. The move is intended to strengthen the security and reliability of Australia’s visa system as increasing numbers of Indians travel to the country for education, employment, tourism and other purposes.

According to an announcement by the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, applicants submitting new Australian visa applications in India from October 26 may be required to provide biometric information, including fingerprints and a facial image. The requirement applies only to applications lodged on or after that date and does not affect existing visas or applications submitted earlier.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants directly, or through their authorised agents, if biometric submission is necessary. Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may be instructed to visit one of 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres across India, operated by VFS Global, or may be eligible to submit their biometric information through the Australian Immi App.

Australian authorities say the expanded system will help verify applicants’ identities, reduce identity fraud and protect legitimate visa applicants from the misuse of their personal information. Australia already collects biometric data from visa applicants in nearly 60 countries, and extending the programme to India brings its procedures into line with established international practices.

The High Commission has stated that the new requirement is not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants comply promptly with official instructions. Applicants have been advised to wait for an official notification before booking an appointment at a collection centre or attempting to use the mobile application.

Privacy safeguards are also central to the announcement. Australian authorities have said biometric information will be managed in accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws, with encrypted channels and security measures intended to ensure the lawful handling of personal information.

The expansion marks a significant procedural change for Indian travellers seeking Australian visas. Applicants are advised to monitor official communications from the Department of Home Affairs and follow the instructions provided, rather than relying on unofficial intermediaries or optional third-party services.
