An Indian captain was attacked by his co-pilot with a crash axe aboard a FlyDubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, while UAE authorities investigate the incident as an attempted terrorist attack.

A FlyDubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was plunged into a mid-air emergency after its co-pilot allegedly attacked the Indian captain with a crash axe inside the cockpit and attempted to take control of the aircraft. UAE authorities have described the incident as a terrorist attack.

The incident occurred aboard Flight FZ1073 on September 30, when the aircraft was carrying more than 170 people. During the confrontation, the aircraft reportedly descended more than 16,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds while flying over Saudi Arabia.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Captain Smit Machchhar managed to maintain control of the aircraft and open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then intervened, while two off-duty pilots travelling on the flight helped stabilise the aircraft. The plane was subsequently diverted and landed safely at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.

The co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hammam al-Hammami, was detained after the emergency landing. UAE authorities have launched an investigation examining the circumstances of the attack, its motive, possible connections and both physical and digital evidence.

The episode has raised serious questions about aviation security and the potential threat posed by individuals inside an aircraft's flight crew. Investigators are examining whether the alleged attack was carried out independently or was connected to a wider extremist network.

The incident has also drawn attention to Captain Machchhar's actions under extreme circumstances. The Federation of Indian Pilots has sought national recognition for his conduct during the emergency, citing his efforts to protect the passengers and bring the aircraft safely to the ground.

The investigation remains underway, with authorities continuing to establish the full circumstances, motive and security implications of the unprecedented cockpit assault.
