MOSCOW, OCTOBER 7: A Liberia-flagged oil tanker came under attack off Russia’s Black Sea coast, triggering a maritime emergency but ending without casualties among its 23 Indian crew members, who were successfully rescued.
The vessel was reportedly targeted while operating in waters off Russia’s Black Sea coastline. The incident prompted an emergency response as authorities moved to secure the crew and evacuate them from the affected tanker.
All 23 Indian nationals aboard the vessel were safely rescued, with no deaths reported among the crew. The incident has nevertheless raised fresh concerns over the growing security risks facing commercial shipping in the strategically important Black Sea.
The attack comes amid continuing military tensions in and around the Black Sea, where commercial vessels have increasingly faced dangers linked to the wider regional conflict. The waterway remains a vital route for energy shipments, grain exports and international maritime trade.
The safety of merchant shipping and civilian crews has emerged as a growing concern as attacks and military activity continue to threaten vessels operating in the region. The successful rescue of the Indian crew has provided relief, while investigations into the circumstances and perpetrators of the attack are expected to continue.
