CLASSROOM TURNS INTO A DISASTER ZONE: SCHOOL ROOF COLLAPSE IN PAKISTAN’S PESHAWAR KILLS CHILDREN AND TEACHER, RESCUE TEAMS RACE AGAINST TIME
October 15, 2026
PESHAWAR — A devastating roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, has killed numerous children and a teacher and left dozens of others injured, triggering an urgent rescue operation as emergency workers search the wreckage for survivors.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday in Dir Colony, a densely populated neighbourhood in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The school building’s roof gave way while students and staff were inside, trapping victims beneath the debris and leaving families desperately searching for their children.
Initial reports from emergency services and hospital authorities confirmed multiple fatalities, with the death toll rising as further information emerged. The victims included schoolchildren aged 13 or younger and a female teacher. More than three dozen people were reported injured, some of them critically.
Rescue teams from Rescue 1122 rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the collapse. Emergency personnel, assisted by local residents, began clearing the rubble and transporting injured children to hospitals. Several victims were taken to Lady Reading Hospital, where an emergency was declared to handle the influx of casualties.
The rescue operation remained under way as officials worked to determine whether additional children or school staff were still trapped beneath the collapsed structure. The possibility of further casualties heightened the urgency of the search.
The incident sparked scenes of anguish around the school and at nearby medical facilities, as parents and relatives gathered for news of their children. Residents also joined rescue efforts, helping emergency personnel reach those caught beneath the debris.
Authorities have raised concerns about the structural condition of the building. Initial accounts indicated that the structure was weak, but the precise cause of the collapse had not yet been conclusively established. An investigation is expected to examine the building’s construction, structural safety and compliance with applicable standards.
The disaster has renewed concerns about building safety in Pakistan, where roof and structural collapses have repeatedly caused deaths and injuries. Previous incidents involving schools and tuition centres have also claimed the lives of children, drawing attention to construction quality, maintenance and enforcement of safety regulations.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the loss of life and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. The immediate priority for emergency services remained rescuing anyone still trapped, treating the injured and identifying those who had died.
The full scale of the tragedy was still emerging as rescue teams continued their work. For the families waiting outside hospitals and the collapsed school, the hours following the disaster were marked by uncertainty and fear.
The collapse has once again placed the safety of educational buildings under scrutiny, raising urgent questions about whether schools are being adequately constructed, inspected and maintained to protect the children and teachers who depend on them every day
