CYBERATTACK TARGETS FRENCH BLOOD BANKS: STORED BLOOD SUPPLIES SAFE AFTER COLD-STORAGE SYSTEMS COMPROMISED

November 4, 2026

Several regional blood-bank facilities across France were targeted in a cyberattack on November 2, disrupting certain monitoring and control systems used to manage cold-storage rooms. However, French authorities confirmed on Wednesday that the country's stored blood products had escaped damage and remained safe for medical use.

The French health ministry said the cyberattack affected several regional facilities operated by the French Blood Establishment (EFS), the national organisation responsible for collecting, storing and distributing blood products.

According to the ministry, hackers compromised certain cybersecurity systems connected to the monitoring and control of refrigerated storage facilities. These systems play an important role in maintaining appropriate storage conditions for blood supplies.

Authorities said the situation was now under control and remained under close monitoring. The safety of the blood products had been preserved through existing monitoring mechanisms, alarm systems and precautionary measures implemented immediately after the incident.

Investigations are underway to establish how the cyberattack was carried out, identify the equipment potentially affected and determine the circumstances surrounding the breach. Officials are also examining the conditions and timeline required for the affected systems to return safely to normal operation.

The incident comes amid a series of cyberattacks targeting refrigeration infrastructure across Europe. On Monday, hackers tampered with refrigeration systems at retail stores in eight European countries, forcing businesses to discard substantial quantities of food. Similar attacks had also affected dozens of supermarkets in France approximately three weeks earlier.

The latest incident has raised concerns about the vulnerability of essential infrastructure to cyberattacks, particularly facilities responsible for preserving temperature-sensitive medical supplies. Although France's blood products remained unaffected, the disruption highlights the importance of reliable monitoring, emergency alarms and cybersecurity safeguards in healthcare supply chains.
