DRONE STRIKE ALLEGATION PUTS MEDINA’S POWER INFRASTRUCTURE AT CENTRE OF SAUDI-HOUTHI CONFRONTATION
October 2, 2026
Saudi Arabia’s military coalition has accused Yemen’s Houthi movement of carrying out a drone attack on an electricity distribution station in Medina, escalating tensions amid renewed hostilities between the two sides. The incident reportedly took place on September 29 at the Taibah power station, which supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites.
According to the Saudi-led coalition, the attack damaged a transformer and forced it out of service, although the wider electricity network remained unaffected. Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki said an investigation, including an examination of drone wreckage, indicated that the Houthis were involved in planning and executing the strike.
The Houthis have rejected the accusation, describing it as fabricated and disputing Saudi claims that they had targeted Islamic holy sites. The competing statements have left responsibility for the Medina incident contested, with no independent verification of the coalition’s findings publicly established.
The coalition alleged that the incident formed part of a broader pattern of attacks threatening the two major Islamic holy cities of Medina and Mecca. Saudi Arabia had previously claimed to have intercepted a Houthi drone near Mecca, an allegation the group also denied. Riyadh has stated that it will continue security measures to protect the holy sites and pilgrims.
The latest confrontation comes amid a serious deterioration in relations following a period of relative calm under a United Nations-brokered truce that largely halted cross-border attacks in 2022. Hostilities have intensified this year, with the Houthis reportedly expanding attacks on Saudi territory and shipping, while Saudi Arabia has responded with airstrikes in Yemen and support for forces aligned with the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
The developments have heightened concerns over the potential expansion of the conflict and the security of critical civilian infrastructure across the region. With accusations and denials continuing, the Medina incident adds another point of tension to an already volatile confrontation, while the prospect of further military action remains uncertain.
