FIVE MEN RELEASED ON BAIL AS UK PROBES SUSPECTED TERROR THREAT NEAR RAF FAIRFORD
September 29, 2026
British counter-terrorism police have released five men on bail following their arrest over a suspected terrorist threat near the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford base in Gloucestershire, while investigations into the incident continue.
The five suspects, all British nationals in their twenties, were arrested on September 27 in the Whelford area after police received reports of three suspicious vehicles travelling towards the airbase. They were detained on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and preparing a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of Counter Terrorism Policing confirmed that the men were released on police bail following interviews and further enquiries. He stressed that their release did not signal the end of the investigation, adding that they remain under investigation and are subject to strict conditions governing their movements and contact with others.
Investigators are examining multiple possible motives, including whether the incident involved individuals acting on behalf of a foreign state. However, authorities have not publicly established any foreign connection or confirmed the precise nature of the suspected threat. Iran’s embassy in London has categorically denied any involvement, describing allegations linking Tehran to the incident as unfounded speculation.
The incident prompted a major security operation near the airbase, including the examination of the vehicles by bomb-disposal specialists and the evacuation of residents from nearby homes. RAF Fairford has been used by US military aircraft, including during operations against Iran, making the incident a focus of wider security and geopolitical attention.
British counter-terrorism officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigators continue their work to establish the circumstances, possible motivation and any individuals involved.
