FIVE MORE PALESTINIANS KILLED IN GAZA AS FRAGILE TRUCE FAILS TO HALT ISRAELI STRIKES

October 10, 2026

At least five Palestinians were killed in two separate Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, October 10, highlighting the continuing violence despite a US-brokered ceasefire agreed a year ago. The attacks occurred in Gaza City as disagreements over disarmament, Israeli troop withdrawal and the future reconstruction of the devastated territory continued to obstruct progress towards a lasting settlement.

According to Gaza health officials, four people were killed in an Israeli strike near Panda Mall in Gaza City, while another person died in a separate attack in the Tuffah neighbourhood, further south of the city. The Israeli military confirmed that the two strikes had targeted militants but did not provide further details about the operations.

Israel has intensified its attacks on Hamas in recent weeks, accusing the Palestinian militant group of rebuilding its military capabilities and carrying out attacks in violation of the ceasefire. Hamas has denied rearming or planning attacks and has accused Israel of undermining the truce.

The latest casualties underscore the fragility of the agreement, which was intended to halt the war and establish conditions for reconstruction and a broader political settlement. Although the ceasefire reduced the scale of major military operations, repeated strikes have continued to claim Palestinian lives.

The agreement also envisaged the eventual reconstruction of Gaza, but little progress has been made towards implementing its wider provisions. The proposed settlement includes the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops, two issues that remain central obstacles to advancing the peace process.

Gaza health officials say at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025. Israel, meanwhile, says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza during the same period.

The wider war began after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and resulted in 251 others being taken hostage. Israel subsequently launched extensive bombardments and ground operations across Gaza. According to Gaza health officials, those operations have killed more than 74,000 people.

The latest strikes demonstrate how the ceasefire has failed to deliver a durable end to the violence. With both sides accusing the other of violating the agreement and key provisions concerning disarmament, troop withdrawal and reconstruction remaining unresolved, Gaza continues to face deadly attacks while the prospects for a lasting peace remain uncertain.
