DUBAI — A disturbing investigation into the attempted takeover of a flydubai passenger aircraft has revealed allegations that the co-pilot planned to deliberately crash the plane into an airport in Israel in what authorities are examining as a possible 9/11-inspired plot.

The co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly attacked the captain while the aircraft was travelling towards Tel Aviv, before attempting to seize control of the cockpit.

The aircraft reportedly plunged thousands of feet during the struggle, creating a potentially catastrophic situation for passengers and crew. The captain eventually managed to regain access to the cockpit, while passengers and other pilots aboard the flight helped restrain the co-pilot.

Investigators are examining the co-pilot’s background, including his previous employment and alleged extremist interests, to establish whether the incident was an isolated act or part of a wider plan.

The aircraft was ultimately brought under control and landed safely, preventing what could have become a major aviation disaster. The incident has since triggered heightened scrutiny of pilot recruitment, background checks and aviation security procedures.

Authorities in the region are continuing to investigate the alleged motive and the circumstances that preceded the cockpit attack. The case has raised fresh concerns over the possibility of individuals attempting to exploit their access to commercial aircraft for deliberate attacks.
