FLYDUBAI MID-AIR ATTACK CALLED TERROR ACT AS INDIAN CAPTAIN’S ACTIONS HELP AVERT CATASTROPHE

The mid-air attack aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv has been described as a terrorist act by a senior Israeli official, amid an ongoing investigation into the motives behind the incident.

Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 people when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar with a knife and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. The Boeing 737 subsequently entered a sharp descent of more than 17,000 feet before the crisis was brought under control.

Machchhar, an Indian national, was seriously injured during the cockpit struggle but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and overpower the attacker. Other pilots travelling on the aircraft subsequently helped regain control of the plane.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar and the co-pilot were taken to hospital, while the passengers were later flown onward to Israel.

Israeli officials said the incident could have resulted in a far greater loss of life had the attempted takeover not been stopped. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar and the passengers who intervened, saying their actions prevented a catastrophic mid-air disaster.

The co-pilot, reported to be an Omani national, has been taken into custody by Saudi authorities. His motives and whether the attack had any wider organisational links remain subjects of investigation, with officials cautioning against premature conclusions.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of aviation security and cockpit access procedures, while Flydubai has said it is cooperating with authorities investigating the unprecedented in-flight confrontation.
