FRANCE BRACES FOR HALLOWEEN UNREST AS COST-OF-LIVING ANGER FUELS A WIDENING PROTEST MOVEMENT

October 27, 2026

PARIS, October 26, 2026: French authorities are preparing for renewed street disturbances on Halloween weekend as demonstrations over the cost of living, public services and education continue to challenge President Emmanuel Macron’s government. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned on Monday that further violence was likely during protests planned for October 31.

The warning follows nationwide demonstrations on Saturday, when authorities deployed 70,000 police officers in an effort to prevent a repeat of earlier violence. Nunez said 1,435 people had been arrested during the demonstrations, which spread beyond initial student grievances to attract trade unions and activists associated with the Yellow Vest movement.

The protests have been accompanied by clashes and confrontations in several cities, including Paris, Marseille and Lyon. Nunez also reported that organised far-right groups had confronted far-left activists in places such as Nice and Montpellier, raising concerns that political antagonism could intensify unrest surrounding the demonstrations.

Macron has acknowledged the need to address protesters’ grievances and promised government measures. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was expected to outline proposals following consultations with student representatives, amid demands for better-funded education and changes to the university admissions system.

However, the unrest is also imposing a growing economic burden. Business representatives reported that many retailers had remained closed as a precaution after earlier violence, with sales in some affected areas falling sharply. The government has argued that restoring public order is necessary for meaningful dialogue, while protesters continue to press their demands.

With another weekend of demonstrations approaching, France faces the difficult task of containing violence while responding to public discontent over living costs, public services and educational opportunities.
