FRANCE ERUPTS IN NATIONWIDE YOUTH UPRISING AS 2.66 LAKH FLOOD STREETS OVER EDUCATION CRISIS
October 7, 2026
PARIS, OCTOBER 7: France witnessed one of its largest student-led protest movements in years as around 2.66 lakh people took to the streets across the country demanding greater funding, better facilities and improved conditions in public schools. The Interior Ministry estimated that about 56,000 demonstrators marched in Paris alone, while organisers put the national turnout considerably higher.
The protests, which began in the Paris region in September, have expanded into a nationwide movement involving students, teachers, parents and other supporters. Demonstrators have highlighted overcrowded classrooms, shortages of teachers, deteriorating school buildings and inadequate resources, turning concerns over education into a broader expression of public frustration.
Tensions escalated in several cities as riot police used tear gas and water cannons against groups of protesters. Clashes were reported particularly in Paris, Strasbourg, Rennes and Toulouse, while some demonstrations remained largely peaceful. Authorities said 488 people were arrested during Tuesday's protests, taking the number of arrests since the movement began to several thousand.
The unrest has also raised questions over police tactics, particularly because many of those involved are teenagers. Serious injuries have been reported during the confrontation, further intensifying criticism of the government's handling of the demonstrations.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has acknowledged the students' concerns and called for solutions, while the Education Ministry has opened an online platform for students to report problems in their schools. Protest organisers, however, have vowed to continue mobilising until concrete improvements and increased investment in education are announced.
