GOOGLE TURNS TO NUCLEAR POWER IN BID TO FEED AI’S SOARING ENERGY APPETITE
October 6, 2026
Google is reportedly pursuing a major nuclear power agreement with US energy company Constellation Energy as technology companies race to secure reliable electricity for the rapidly expanding artificial-intelligence industry.
The proposed deal, reportedly worth more than $1 billion, would strengthen Google’s efforts to obtain long-term access to nuclear-generated electricity as its data centres consume increasingly large amounts of power. The company is among several major technology firms exploring nuclear energy as a dependable source of low-carbon electricity.
The growing demand from AI systems has placed enormous pressure on electricity infrastructure, with data centres requiring continuous power for advanced computing and large-scale processing. Traditional renewable sources can provide substantial clean energy but may not always deliver electricity continuously, increasing interest in nuclear generation.
A partnership with Constellation could therefore give Google access to a stable electricity supply while supporting its broader climate and energy objectives. The reported negotiations also reflect a major shift in the technology sector, where electricity availability is increasingly being treated as a strategic requirement for future AI expansion.
The potential agreement comes as the United States seeks to expand nuclear generation after years of limited growth in the sector. Technology companies are emerging as an important new source of demand, potentially providing financial support for existing reactors as well as future nuclear projects.
If finalised, the deal could become another major example of the increasingly close relationship between the global AI boom and the nuclear-energy industry, as technology giants search for dependable power to sustain the next generation of computing.
