HEAVY RAINS TRIGGER FLOODS AND LANDSLIDES ACROSS INDIA; NEPAL AVALANCHE LEAVES 10 MISSING

September 27, 2026

Heavy rain and storms have triggered floods and landslides across parts of India and Nepal, killing at least 19 people and leaving 10 people missing, according to authorities.

In India, Uttar Pradesh reported 15 deaths and widespread damage after intense rainfall affected dozens of districts. The Central Water Commission said water levels at 30 monitoring stations across seven states were in a severe situation, with several major rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada, rising above danger levels.

Nepal has also been severely affected by the continuing rainfall. Four people were killed when a landslide buried a house in Baglung district, while authorities warned of possible flash floods across several districts. Flooding and landslides have disrupted major highways and damaged infrastructure in several areas.

Meanwhile, an avalanche struck the 7,126-metre Himlung Himal in Manang district, leaving 10 people, including expedition support staff, unaccounted for. Authorities are gathering information and monitoring rescue efforts as persistent rain and snowfall continue in the mountain region.

The latest weather emergency comes weeks after devastating floods in Nepal that killed more than 1,450 people and left thousands unaccounted for, adding to concerns over the impact of further rainfall on already vulnerable communities and infrastructure.
