INDIA AND AFRICA SEEK A GENERATIONAL ALLIANCE BUILT ON TRADE, TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT
October 7, 2026
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for a deeper and long-term partnership between India and Africa, describing the relationship as one that should extend beyond conventional diplomacy and evolve into a broad-based strategic partnership.
Speaking at an India-Africa forum in New Delhi, Jaishankar stressed that the two sides share strong historical connections but must now build a relationship suited to emerging global challenges. He highlighted cooperation in trade, investment, digital technology, healthcare, education, infrastructure, energy and capacity building as key areas for expansion.
The minister emphasised India's experience in digital public infrastructure and development-oriented technology, suggesting that these capabilities could contribute to Africa's economic transformation while creating new opportunities for Indian businesses and institutions.
Jaishankar also underlined the importance of greater economic engagement, noting the considerable potential for expanding two-way trade and investment. He argued that India's partnership with African countries should be based on mutual benefit, local priorities and respect for national sovereignty.
The push comes as India seeks a larger role in the developing global economic and political order, while African countries increasingly look to diversify international partnerships. New Delhi's effort to strengthen ties with the continent could therefore become an important component of India's wider strategy for building stronger relationships across the Global South.
