INDIA CHALLENGES PAKISTAN AT UN, QUESTIONS MILITARY’S GRIP OVER CIVILIAN RULE
October 4, 2026
NEW YORK — India has criticised Pakistan at the United Nations over its political and military establishment, arguing that the country’s civilian governments operate under the influence of its powerful military leadership amid renewed exchanges over Kashmir.
Addressing the international forum, the Indian representative questioned Pakistan’s democratic credentials, describing its civilian administrations as governments that function at the discretion of the military. New Delhi also rejected Islamabad’s allegations concerning Kashmir and reiterated its position on the region.
The diplomatic confrontation comes amid longstanding tensions between the two neighbouring countries over Kashmir, which has remained a central point of disagreement in their bilateral relations. Both sides have repeatedly raised competing claims and accusations at international forums.
India’s remarks also highlighted concerns over the role of the Pakistani military in the country’s political affairs, with New Delhi using the UN platform to challenge Islamabad’s assertions.
The latest exchange underscores the continuing diplomatic friction between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, with Kashmir remaining a major obstacle to the normalisation of bilateral relations.
